What does PTEC mean?

Professional Tax Enrolment Certificate (PTEC) was introduced by the Government of India to improve accountability in a collection of professional taxes.

Professional tax is the tax that must be paid by a person who has been enrolled under the professional tax. This enrolment happens when a person starts working in a firm or office which falls under the state’s jurisdiction. If you are engaged in practicing your profession, then your employer will deduct your amount from your salary and pay professional tax to the government. You have to file an income tax return every year even if you have not earned anything during that particular year.

This enrolment certificate is also an important document for Income Tax Return filing purposes along with a PAN card.

Enrollment under the professional tax is only for a particular state where you are employed or you practice your profession. You may have to apply for this enrolment certificate separately in each of those states. The relevant office will send its copy to the income department, which comes under the Central Government.
